PROTECT YOUR ACHILLE’S HEEL

By Donna Kirsch, L.M.T.

The Achilles tendon runs from your heel to the calf muscle and plays a big role in basic locomotion. The mechanics of walking depends heavily on this, the body’s thickest and most powerful tendon. Have you ever wondered how the Achilles tendon got its name? According to legend, Achilles was best known as the greatest hero of the most celebrated of all mythological wars. Born the seventh son to Pelus and Thetis, his parents wanted him to be an invincible warrior. To protect her young son, Thetis took Achilles by the foot and dipped him in the river Styx. Now Achilles’ only weakness was his one heel, which never touched the magical water. Years later during the Trojan War, Achilles” arch-enemy took advantage of his one and only weakness and shot him mortally in the heel -- thus the proverbial Achilles’ Heel.

Warning signs

This tendon is forced to bear the brunt of all walking and running activities, which makes it vulnerable to injuries. Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the legendary tendon and a popular injury to runners. Sudden increases in training and/or nonsupportive shoes can easily cause tendinitis. Spend time stretching before and after all athletic activities. Pay special attention to the hamstrings, a tight hamstring unit stresses the Achilles. Change to new shoes at the first sign of serious wear and tear, and inserts can help protect the heel from the force of running. Since pain is the body’s indicator that something is wrong, pay close attention to any warning signs.

A ruptured Achilles is a very serious injury and is likely the result of working out through the pains and aches of tendinitis. Surgery accompanied by a long recovery is most certainly on the horizon after such an injury. Listen to your body and rest when pain starts. Again, massage is a wonderful way to flush your muscles and encourage fresh circulation.
